Stamp value checker
Stamp value from a photo: what is your stamp worth?
The stamp value check identifies the country, issue and catalog number from one photo, notes the condition, estimates what stamps like it actually sold for, and says whether to keep, sell or have it checked by an expert.
What the stamp value report shows
Country, year, denomination, design and catalog number, with whether it is a definitive or a commemorative.
An estimate from what the photo shows: centering, perforations, the cancellation and any faults on the front.
An estimate from recent auction results and sold listings of that issue in that condition.
How scarce the issue is and how often collectors buy it, in plain words.
One plain verdict, with the reason.
- Album filler
- Quick sale
- Replacement value
- Ask an expert
Where to list it, how to batch similar stamps, or when to seek an appraisal, and an optional export of your list.
Your turn
Check a stamp value from one photo
One stamp per photo, in daylight. Leave it on the envelope or the album page; a loose stamp goes on a plain dark background.
Looking for the price of postage?
This stamp value check is for collector value. As postage, a US Forever stamp stays valid for full First-Class postage even after prices change; today's prices are in the USPS price list.
Method
How the stamp value check works
- 01
Photograph the stamp
Flat, in daylight, every perforation in frame. Leave it on the envelope or the album page; a loose stamp goes on a plain dark background.
- 02
Identify the issue
The stamp identifier reads the country, year, denomination and design, and finds its catalog number.
- 03
Grade what the photo shows
It notes centering, perforations, the cancellation and the faults that show, and says which details need the stamp in hand.
- 04
Estimate the market value
It compares your stamp against recent auction results and sold listings of the same issue in the same condition.
- 05
Read the verdict and decide
Album filler, quick sale, replacement value or ask an expert, with the reason in plain answers. Then list it, batch it, keep it or export your list.
Photos
How to photograph a stamp for a value check
Photograph it where it is: on the envelope or the album page; a loose stamp goes on a dark cloth. The check reads what the photo shows within the frame.
Do
Use daylight
Near a window, without flash: the colours and the cancellation show as they are.
Use a plain dark background for a loose stamp
The perforations stand out against it, so every edge can be read.
Get every perforation in frame
The whole stamp with its margins and all four edges, in focus.
One stamp per photo
Fill the frame with it, so the design and the inscription are sharp.
Don't
Do not soak or peel it off
Leave it on the envelope or the page; peeling can tear the paper or leave a hinge remnant.
Do not trim the edges
Cut perforations and margins cannot be put back.
Do not touch the gum
Hold it by the edge, with stamp tongs if you have them.

Old stamps value: what makes an old stamp worth more
Age alone does not decide it. Most collections are mostly common stamps, and most of their value sits in a small part of them. These are the things that set that part apart.
- The issue
Which country, year and design it is. Definitives were printed in huge quantities and sold for years; commemoratives were sold for a limited time.
- Condition
Whether it is cancelled or hinged, whether it has flaws, and how well it is centered all help determine its value.
- Errors
A printing mistake that left the printer, such as a center printed upside down, can make an issue famous.
- Varieties
One printing of a stamp can be scarcer than another: the 4-cent stamp coil of the Liberty Issue in its "wet" printing exists only precanceled and is the key item of the series.
- Covers
A cover is an envelope with its stamp; a first day cover carries a stamp cancelled on its first day of sale. The check reads a stamp on its cover, so keep it whole.
- Demand
What collectors look for now: a dealer who specializes in one country or area may pay more for its stamps than a general dealer.

Postage stamp grading: what condition means for value
A stamp is identified and graded from a handful of details. The check notes each one the photo shows; an expert with the stamp in hand settles the rest.
| Detail | What it is |
|---|---|
| Centering | The position of the design within the perforations. On a perfectly centered stamp the spacing is equal on all four sides |
| Perforations | The holes punched between stamps. Collectors measure them with a perf gauge, counted in each 2 cm |
| Gum | The adhesive on the back. A mint stamp has its full gum and has not been hinged |
| Hinge | A small folded piece of gummed paper used to mount a stamp in an album. Collectors mark stamps as never hinged, hinged or with a hinge remnant |
| Cancellation | The mark the post office puts on a stamp to show it has been used |
| Watermark | A thinner part of the paper, added as a security device; it often needs special fluid to be seen |

Famous stamps people ask about
A few rare and classic stamps carry most of the stories. Knowing why they are famous helps you tell them from the common stamps that look like them.
- Penny Black, Great Britain, 1840
The world's first adhesive postage stamp in a public postal system, with a profile of Queen Victoria. Over 68 million were printed, and used copies remain readily available to collectors.
- Inverted Jenny, United States, 1918
A 24-cent stamp for airmail with the Curtiss JN-4 airplane printed upside down. Only one pane of 100 was ever found.
- Elvis Presley, United States, 1993
A 29-cent stamp: the first of the Legends of American Music series, chosen by a public vote between a young and an older Elvis.
- Lincoln, United States
Lincoln is on a 4-cent stamp of the Liberty Issue (1954 to 1965) and on a 4-cent stamp of the Prominent Americans series that followed.

German postage stamp values and other countries
The check reads stamps of many countries by their inscriptions and designs. German stamps show how much the issuing post decides about a stamp.
Before unification, states issued their own stamps: Bavaria first, on November 1, 1849, with the one kreuzer black
Its first stamps on January 1, 1872; the most common were the Germania stamps, from 1900
During the hyperinflation the Reichspost issued stamps with values in the billions of marks
West Germany's first issue on September 7, 1949
Its own stamps from September 3, 1948 to reunification in 1990, many of them like the West German ones
The Deutsche Post of the GDR from October 9, 1949, with about 3,000 different stamps

Stamp collection value: where to start with an album
An inherited album or stock book is where many stamp questions start. The American Philatelic Society suggests a few steps before anyone puts a value on it.
- Keep it safe first
Store it cool and dry, not in an attic or a basement: humidity can destroy a collection's value. Keep albums upright.
- Look for papers
Instructions from the owner, an insurance policy or an inventory list all help determine what the collection is worth.
- Get help in person
A local club member can help judge whether the collection is worth the cost of an appraisal; a collection needs to be seen in person.
- Compare offers
Visit more than one dealer or a stamp show, so you can compare what several dealers will pay.

Scope
What a stamp value check can and cannot tell from a photo
A photo can show
- The issue: country, year, denomination, design and catalog number
- Centering, perforations and the faults a photo can show
- Printing errors that show in a photo
- A value estimate from recent sold listings and auctions of that issue
- Whether to keep it, sell it or have an expert look at it
Only an expert with it in hand can tell
- Whether a valuable stamp is genuine: an expertizing service gives that opinion
- The gum, hinge marks and thins on a back you did not photograph
- Its watermark and its exact perforation measure
- What postage it pays today: ask USPS
Searchers ask what a stamp is worth and what to do with it, not only its name. The check starts from the issue and adds a value, a verdict and a next step.

FAQ
Stamp value questions, answered
How do I check if my stamps are valuable?
Photograph one stamp at a time, flat and in daylight. The check identifies the issue, notes the condition and estimates the value from recent sales, then says whether it is album filler or worth a closer look.
How do I find out if my old stamps are worth anything?
Start with the issue and the condition: age alone does not make a stamp valuable. Most collections are mostly common stamps, with most of the value in a small part. The check finds that part, stamp by stamp.
How much is one postage stamp worth?
As postage, a US Forever stamp is worth full First-Class postage at today's rate, even after prices change; the current prices are in the USPS price list. As a collectible, the check says when an issue or an error is worth more than its postage.
Do I still need a postage stamp appraisal near me?
Only for some stamps. A formal appraisal may not be needed unless it is required for legal purposes. The check says which stamps deserve one, and a local club or dealer can help you find an appraiser near you.
How can the check help before a stamp collection appraisal?
It builds a list of the stamps you photograph, with the issue, an estimate and a verdict for each, and marks the ones worth a closer look. Bring that list to the appraiser, and agree the fee and the basis of the valuation first.
What is the value of a Lincoln 4 cent stamp, as a postage stamp or a collectible?
There is more than one: Lincoln is on a 4-cent stamp of the Liberty Issue and on a 4-cent stamp of the Prominent Americans series. The check reads which issue you have, notes its condition and estimates its value from recent sales.
What is the Elvis postage stamp value?
The 1993 Elvis Presley stamp is a 29-cent stamp, a commemorative, the first of the Legends of American Music series. The check reads whether yours is that issue, notes its condition and estimates its collector value from recent sales.
Can I identify a stamp online for free?
Yes. Trying the stamp identifier here is free and needs no card, no account and no trial. It runs in your browser, with no app to install, and your scans build one list.
Where do the stamp values in the report come from?
From recent auction results and sold listings of the same issue in a similar condition. They are sold prices, not asking prices.
Does condition like gum, centering and postmarks change a stamp's value?
Yes. Whether a stamp is cancelled or hinged, whether it has flaws and how well it is centered all help determine its value. The check notes each one the photo shows.
Why do stamp values swing so much from one scan to the next?
A value means little until the exact issue and the condition are fixed. The check ties each estimate to one issue, its catalog number and the condition it read, so the same stamp aims to get the same answer.
Can I export my stamp valuation report to a spreadsheet or PDF?
Yes, as an option: your list of checked stamps exports to a spreadsheet or a PDF, to keep for your records or share with family, a dealer or an appraiser.
I inherited a stamp collection: how do I start valuing it?
Keep it cool and dry first, look for any inventory or insurance papers, then check the stamps one by one. A local stamp club can help judge whether the collection is worth a formal appraisal.
Is there a rule of thumb for whether a stamp might be valuable?
No single rule. The issue, errors and varieties, the condition and demand from collectors decide it, which is why the check reads each of them.
Should I take stamps off envelopes or album pages first?
No. Photograph them as they are: the check reads a stamp on the envelope or the page, so nothing needs to come off.
Can AI detect a forged stamp?
A photo can show signs worth checking; the verdict says when a stamp should go to an expert. Whether a valuable stamp is genuine, repaired or altered is an expert's opinion: an expertizing service gives it with the stamp in hand.
Do you buy stamps?
We do not buy, sell or bid on stamps.
Is this stamp value checker free, or a subscription?
Trying the form is free: no card, no account and no trial, so there is nothing to cancel.
An album in a drawer?
Photograph the stamps one by one, without taking anything out. The stamp value check says which are album filler and which deserve a closer look.
